Hey everyone! For our fourth quarter project this year we are working with Kauai Grown again. Kate, Ty and I are on the Photography team which means our responsibilities are different from the Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter teams. I feel like I have been doing my job and fulfilling my responsibilities. I have been alright with my daily check-ins in Basecamp but some days I work on the eighth grade slideshow instead of Kauai Grown so I don't check in everyday.
One of my responsibilities is obviously taking pictures at farmer's markets and farms when we go to film personal profiles. I've only taken pictures at the 2018 Garden Fair and Lee's bee farm so far. I plan on taking pictures at upcoming farmers markets soon, and we are going back to Lee's bee farm on Friday to take close up pictures. I'm also responsible for uploading the pictures to Basecamp so the social media teams can use them for posts.
Our team is also responsible for making flyers about upcoming farmer's markets and our Kauai Grown program in general. We have been using Canva to make the flyers and when we finish one we upload it to Basecamp and the social media teams can also post these. I've completed four flyers so far, but there are still so much more I need to make.
We have also been assigned a farm to create a personal profile on, which is Lee's Bees. Ty, Kate, and I have already went to the farm to film an interview with Lee and I've taken some pictures. We still need to go back to film b-roll and take close up pictures because Lee only had one bee suit. Our team has also made a T.I.A.S. a 5 points, and Ty has transcribed the interview already. I started editing and we are working on the script right now.
These are the reasons why I feel like I have been fulfilling my responsibilities for our Kauai Grown project. There is still so much more we need to do and I definitely want to go to take more pictures. That is all for this week's blog. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! This week's blog topic is about the things we have learned in the media class that has helped me outside of the class.
In media a skill that you learn and get a lot of practice at is communicating with others whether it's people you already know or people you just met. When you go out to shoot interviews you get to practice your communication and people skills. I've done so many interviews with complete strangers I've started learning how to
Hey everyone! This week's blog is about the video we are going to show for family night. At family night each student chooses a video that they worked on this year to show for all of the currents students' families and some of next years students' families. This year I am going to show my PSA on putting down electronics.
One reason I want to show my putting down electronics PSA is because it's my favorite video that I have created this year. I enjoyed filming and editing it a lot and I think that it turned out well. I like the shots and different scenery because it really shows off the beautiful places around our island. I worked hard on my PSA and put in time on the weekend to go around our island to film and I learned a lot while editing my video as well.
I want to show my putting down electronics PSA because it was nominated for Olelo. I'm pretty proud of myself for having it nominated and that's how I know its pretty good. I submitted all of the videos I worked on this year to Olelo and out of all of them this one was chosen. I really do feel like this was one of my best videos I've created this school year and I hope everyone enjoys watching it.
Another reason I want to show my putting down electronics PSA is because I think it tells an important message. I think people miss a lot from staring at their phone and especially now that some parts of Kauai are flooded and destroyed everyone is realizing how beautiful our island is/was. People are always looking down at their phone instead of enjoying .whatever is going on around them and I think people need to know when to put away their electronics.
For family night I want to play my third quarter, putting down electronics PSA because it's my favorite project that I've made this year, it's an Olelo finalist, and I think it tells an important message. If you want to see my PSA you can go to my third quarter project page to watch it. I can't wait for family night and I hope everyone enjoys watching it. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Our class just came back from our STN trip in Tennessee and Boston. It was a lot of fun and an amazing experience. In this blog I will be reflecting our STN trip by talking about some highlights, some things that I learned, and some low points.
One of the highlights of the trip was the closing ceremony. Closing ceremony is always one of my favorite things at STN because everyone is so hyped since you get to find out how well you did. Even though I am always very nervous, it's always very exciting and I think we did very well. Kate and I got second place for spot feature, which I am very glad about, and I'm so proud of all the seventh graders for getting first place for Crazy 8's. Another highlight of the trip was getting to play in the snow in Boston. I made a snowman, snow angels, and I tried to slide down a hill but it didn't work out very well. I also really enjoyed ice skating too. I'm not very good at it but I was able to move away from the wall and I was having a blast because we don't have an iceskating rink on Kauai.
This trip I learned a lot about my classmates when we did the activity where we have to observe one classmate each day. Then, when we got back to the hotel that night we would write positive things about them. When we visited Harvard I also learned many things about college. Kahunui told us that she figured out what she wanted to do by trying different things. She tried things she didn't have much experience in and really enjoyed it. She also said that if you are willing to stay up late and work on a project for a certain class you may want to consider it as a career. During the spot feature competition I learned to stay focused and not to let rejection get to you. We were shot down multiple times before someone said yes but in the end it worked out because we didn't give up.
There weren't many low points on this trip but I will say that it's too bad that we weren't able to get to Concord Middle School due to the snow on the roads. We worked hard on the slideshow presentation and practiced multiple times before but it's alright because we ended up playing in the snow for most of the day which was really fun. I'd also like to say that the plane rides this year weren't very smooth and there was a lot of turbulence. It also doesn't help that the flights were long as well. That's the only things that I can really think of that were low points on this trip.
Overall, this was an amazing trip and I had a great time. I want to say thank you to our teacher, and our chaperones for taking on the giant task of watching my classmates and I for two weeks. I would also like to thank my classmates for the amazing trip as well, without them it wouldn't have been nearly as fun. I also want to thank the students from Kealakehe for helping us out for Crazy 8's, I'm so glad we were able to meet them. I can't believe this is my last year going to STN with the CKTV media class and I will definitely miss all of this when I go to high school. Good luck to next years group, I know you guys are going to do an astonishing job!
Happy New Year guys! This week I will be doing a blog on my new goals for the third quarter. My goals are to get an A on my third quarter project, turn in all of my Inside Scoops on time, and get better at writing voiceovers and 5 points.
This quarter I want to get an A on my PSA. I need to make multiple drafts of my PSA before the deadline. This will hopefully help me get a better grade on it and it's always good to get feedback. Last quarter I didn't get as much drafts in as I would have liked and I know I could have done much better. I need to make sure I don't procrastinate and wait till the last minute.
Another goal I have for this quarter is to turn in all of my radios in on time. Our class has been having a difficult time turning in our Inside Scoops on time and it is affecting FM97. I want to make sure I turn in all of my Inside Scoops by Thursday or earlier. This means I cannot procrastinate on collecting information, writing scripts, recording, or editing. This also means we cannot talk to fast or have static in the back of our radios because we will have to re-record them.
My final goal is to become better at writing voiceovers and 5 points for news stories. Even though we won't be doing news stories this quarter, I am still on the Spot Feature team for STN and I want to make sure our story is solid. Last year Kolten was really good at coming up with our voiceovers and 5 points, but he's not here to help us this year and we can't let that impact us too greatly. Making sure we know how to write good voiceovers and a good 5 points will hopefully give us more confidence and help us out at STN.
My three goals for the third quarter are to get an A on my PSA, turn in my Inside Scoops on time, and become better at writing 5 points and voiceovers for news stories. That's all for this week's blog! Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! This week I will be writing about what I am thankful for since Thanksgiving is this week. I am thankful for my mom and my dad, who do a lot for me, and I'm thankful that I am able to attend school to get an education. I am also thankful for being able to call this island our home.
I am extremely thankful for my mom. She works really hard so we have money to buy food, and pay for our house, and electricity and so much more. After a long day at work she comes home and makes dinner for us which is not easy. My mom even helps me with homework and finds time to help my dad with media fundraisers. I am really also really grateful for my dad. He does so much for our family and our school. My dad works very hard so our family can have a house and food. He not only teaches us, but he comes in on weekends and does a lot of extra work so our class can fundraise and prepare for STN. Sometimes he stays after school late to buy food to sell for snack shop. He also stay after school so we can practice for STN and comes in on weekends for craft fairs.
I am also very grateful that I am able to go to school so I can get an education and I am very thankful for our teachers. Our teachers work hard to teach us things we will need to succeed later in life. It's a lot of work to grade our tests and plan lessons. Despite also being thankful for having a four day weekend I am very thankful for being able to go to school and learn.
I am so thankful that we live on this beautiful island. I honestly don't know if I could live anywhere else because it seems so calm and there isn't just buildings everywhere. Not to mention the traffic everywhere else is awful. Plus, our island is so small that it doesn't take forever to get to the other side of the island. Kauai also has very friendly people and there is a good chance you know them.
These are just a few things I am thankful for. I am thankful for many other things like my friends, my siblings, the rest of my family, etc. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving or turkey day. Bye!
Hey everyone! This week's blog topic is on how we feel the school year is going so far, and how we feel about having only thirteen students in our class this year. Overall, it feels the same as last year, but there is a bit more work to do since there is less students in the class. We have more Inside Scoops to do this year, and we have to work announcements almost every week. Although, quarterly projects seem to be the same as last year.
One thing that has changed a bit from last year is the amount of times we have to do Inside Scoops. Since there are only thirteen students in our class this year we have t do six or seven sets of radios compared to doing three or four like last year. This also means that once we finish a set of Inside Scoops we have to start a new set two weeks later. For radios this year we also work with two different people instead of working with the same person each time like last year.
Morning announcements also changed from last year because we only have two morning announcements teams. That means we are working almost every week because you are either announcing or working behind the scenes. We also have to make more advisory games this year, but it isn't that much more work.
One thing that didn't really change from last year is our quarterly projects. First quarter was just like last year, we continued our summer camp projects and then did a teacher profile. For second quarter we are doing a PSA instead of a news story but I feel like it's the same amount of work as last year. So, no work has been really added for our quarterly projects.
As you can see, there are a few changes in media this year. I don't mind it that much, but there is more work than last year. Although, I don't think that the quarterly projects got harder or has more work added. I think that things are going well this year, overall. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! This week's blog topic is our new goals for the second quarter. Last quarter one of my goals was to not procrastinate on the eighth grade slideshow and we took pictures and chose songs for the eighth grade slideshow. My other goal was to keep up with all of my work and make all of my deadlines and I think that I did a pretty decent job at that as well. My third goal from last quarter was to communicate well with all of my partners. I need to work on that because sometimes I forget that Halea and Abby aren't returnees and that they might not understand what they need to do. My new goal for this quarter is to get an A on both of my videos this quarter. To do this I will have to turn in multiple drafts of my videos before the due date, not procrastinate, and get feedback from others in our class.
To achieve my goal I can turn in multiple drafts of my videos before the final draft is due. This will allow me to get feedback on my projects and I can make changes before it's actually graded. Then I can get a better grade because I was already able to fix some of my mistakes.
Another thing I can do to achieve my goal is make sure I do not procrastinate. This will make sure that I am always working on my projects and that I don't wait till the last minute to work film or edit my projects. When you wait till the last minute then you usually end up not making the video that great because you are just rushing around trying to put anything together to meet your deadline.
The last thing that I can do to achieve my goal is get feedback from multiple people. Before we turn in a final draft I want to have a draft already done and get feedback from others in our class. It's always good to get feedback from others because they might catch a mistake that you've never noticed.
My goal for this quarter is to get an A on the PSA and teacher profile I have to make this quarter. To achieve this goal I can turn in multiple drafts of my video before the final draft is due, not procrastinate, and get feedback from others in our class. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! This weeks blog topic is the toughest challenge for me in media so far this year. I think that radios have been very difficult for me this year because we have to do a lot more radios than in previous years, schools don't always call or email us back when we call for information and I have difficult radio dates this year.
Since our class is smaller this year we have to do more radios. We have to do radios about two times each quarter and once you finish a set of radios, you start up a new set two weeks later. So this doesn't give you much of a break in between because you start two weeks in advanced of your air date.
Another reason why I feel that radios have been the toughest challenge this year is because when we call schools to gather information for our radios they usually transfer us to their school's activity coordinator. Then we usually have to leave a message with an email or phone number because they don't answer the phone. Although many schools don't call or email us back. And their websites aren't always updated or they don't have enough information.
Finally, I feel that radios have been the toughest challenge so far because I have some of the more difficult dates this year. My current set of radios air over fall break which means there are less announcements because we don't have school that week which means we have to fill up the time. I also have to announce over winter break as well which means our radios will probably be short too. This also means our radios are due the week our projects are due because it's the week before break.
As you can see, the toughest challenge to me, so far this year is the Inside Scoops because we have to do more Inside Scoops, school's don't always provide us with information, and I have tough dates to announce. Thanks for reading! Bye!
Hey everyone! This is my first blog of the new school year. This will be my last year in media because I am an eighth grader. Anyways, in this weeks blog I will be sharing my three goals for the new school year, which are, to not wait till the last minute to work on the eighth grade slideshow, meet all of my deadlines for my projects, and to communicate effectively with all of my partners.
My first goal for this school year is to not procrastinate on the eighth grade slideshow. In previous years the eighth graders have forgotten about the project and waited till the third or fourth quarter to start. They get the same lecture at the beginning of each year about not procrastinating, and yet they always seem to be scrambling towards the end of the year. I want to make sure we start right away and not forget about it until it's almost due.
Another goal I have for this year is to keep up with all of my work and meet all of my deadlines. Since there is only 13 students in our class this year, we have a lot more work to do. We have more radios, and we have to work morning announcements almost every week. I still want to be able to keep up with all of my different projects, and turn them all in on time. Not only in media, but in other classes too.
My last goal is to communicate with everyone and make sure me and my partners are on the same page. This year I have to work with a lot more people than last year. My two partners for Inside Scoops is Abby and Halea, I work with Ty on Kauai Grown, I work with Abby for the first quarter, and the three other eighth graders for eighth grade slideshow. I feel that the only way to succeed in this class is to communicate with your partners because you need to work together.
My goals for this school year is to not procrastinate on the eighth grade slideshow, keep up with all of my school work and make all of the deadlines, and to be on the same page as all of my partners. Since we have more work to do this year, our class only has to post one blog each week. Thanks for reading!
