Day 1: Warner Brothers, UCLA, & LAker's Game
Hey guys! We landed in L.A. yesterday and today was our first full day here. Today we went to Warner Brother's Studio and we got to see a bunch of cool stuff there. We got to see Bat Mobiles and some sets where they filmed movies or TV shows. I was so excited because one of the shows they filmed there was "Friends" and I am a huge fan of that show. You could actually sit on the couch from "Central Perk" and it was really cool. They also had this whole "Harry Potter" section too. You could get sorted into your house, and I got Ravenclaw. After that, we went to UCLA and learned about their theatre and film programs or courses. Then we went to the Laker's Game. Everyone was super excited and we were all cheering super loud. When the game ended the score was tied so they played over time. The game was a lot longer than I expected it to be, but it was a lot of fun and the Laker's won!
Day 2: Universal Studio
Hey everyone! Today was very exciting because we went on a tour and some rides at Universal Studio. We went on a bunch of rides in the morning, then we split into two groups and the first group went to get their tour. I was in the second group so we went on more rides like, the "Jurassic Park" ride, and the "Transformers" ride. Then we ate lunch and went shopping for candy in the 'Wizarding World of Harry Potter" and some students got Butter Beer. On the tour we got to see where they filmed parts of "Back to the Future" and we went on 3D simulation rides too. After the tour we went on the "Minion" simulation ride and on the "Harry Potter" ride. For dinner we went to "City Walk", then we went shopping for an hour and walked home.
Day 3: Hollywood Stars & Downtown Disney
Hey guys! Today we had a really good breakfast at Bob’s Big Boy. Taylor Nishimoto got a waffles and I got an omelet and we split it in half and shared. We did this because we couldn't choose which one we wanted. After we went to look at the stars of famous celebrities on the sidewalk. We saw Kevin Hart’s star, John Stamos’ star, and Walt Disney’s star. It was really cool and after we went shopping for a little while and got to see the Hollywood sign. After we went on the bus and took a long drive to the new hotel, where the convention is being held. Then we walked to Downtown Disney and ate lunch and went shopping a little.
Day 4: Angels Stadium, Disney Studios, Pen Pal Dinner
Hey everyone! Today was a lot of fun and I had a great time! We went to eat breakfast at McDonalds, and after we went to the Angels Stadium and got a tour. It was super cool because we could see where they practice batting, we got to go on the field, and sit in the dugout. We also learned a lot of history about the Angels team. After that we went back to L.A. to go on a Disney Studios tour. It was really cool and we learned a lot about animation and what they need to make a good Disney film. While we were there we also saw Josh Gad, he's the actor who voiced Olaf in Frozen and he plays LeFou in Beauty and the Beast. Everyone was so excited to meet him. After the Disney tour we went back to the hotel in Anaheim and we went to dinner with our pen pals. I loved my pen pal gift from Beth, which was a Camp Halfblood shirt (only Percy Jackson fans would know). We ate at Bubba Gumps and I had a really big cheeseburger. After dinner we just went back to the hotel.
Day 5: Crazy 8's & Opening Ceremonies
Hi guys! Today we had our first competition, which was the Crazy 8’s competition. I am on the News Magazine team and our topic was Social Justice. We had a really hard time finding stories and got turned down a bunch of times. We left at about 9:15 and just went out on the street to look for stories. Jasmine, Rayden, and I found a story at 10:45 and we had to be back at the hotel at 11:30 or earlier. We ended up doing a story about this guy that works at this pizza place and about how even though he didn't go to college he still was able to rise and be a corporate trainer. Once we got back we started editing. Later on Mr. M had corrections we needed to make on the videos. We took a pretty long time to make corrections because we had rewrite and re record voiceovers. We finished putting our video in the timeline at around 3:00 which was really late and I feel bad about that, but I also laid down the opening and some of the videos in the final timeline. I also helped the anchoring team film. It was coming close to the deadline and we couldn't find one of the anchoring stand ups so they had to go and refilm it. We realize after they refilled that one that there was another stand up missing and the videos might be out of order. So they gave me flash drive to turn in and when I come back they said they may have put the wrong clip on the flash drive. Everyone started freaking out and many people started crying. The Castaic students also didn't make their News Magazine deadline because there video took too long to export. Our Film team turned there's in on time and I think they did a good job. Their topic was “Tomorrow the World” and their prop was an earth ball. Then we ate dinner with Castaic and went to Opening Ceremonies.
Day 6: Spot Feature & Film Excellence Awards
Hey guys! Today I had my Spot Feature competition with Kolten and Kate. We got our topic at 8:00 and it was "Artistic Type". Once we got the topic we started walking around, but we had to stay in the boundaries. Since it was morning not a lot of stores were open and we got turned down a lot. We actually walked around everywhere in the boundaries and still didn't get a story. At 10:30 we would have to be in the editing room and we only got a story at 10:00. We decided to ask Castaic if we could interview them and did our story on film making. Kolten and I arrived at the editing room late but we were able to turn it in on time and I think we did pretty good. After we went to a break out session and saw behind the scenes from the movie "World of Apes" and how they filmed it. After we ate dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and went to the Excellence Awards. Castaic won for best film! A bunch of Hawaii schools won stuff too!
Day 7: Breakout Sessions & Angles vs Dodgers Game
Hi guys! Today we helped out Castaic with their videos because they helped us out big time yesterday. I acted in our PSA teams video about nutrition. Then we went to act in Castaic's Silent Film and their Movie Trailer. We went to breakout sessions after about, fake news and where they made suggestions to videos and basic tips that are helpful. Thankfully all teams finished on time! We went to the Anaheim Angels game after and it was really fun. They won against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then we just went back to the hotel
Day 8: Closing Ceremonies and Disneyland
Hey everyone! Today was closing ceremonies, my favorite part of the convention. I was super excited and we won 3rd place for Spot Feature! I was very surprised because we found our story 30 minutes before we had to be in the editing room. Anchoring and PSA won 3rd place as well. Music Video and Movie trailer both won honorable mention. And Nat Sound won first place!!! The Hawaii schools and Castaic did really well too. Both of our teams didn't place for Crazy 8's but that's okay. After we were off to Disneyland to celebrate. Disney land was a lot of fun, but the Ferris Wheel and the Swing ride scared me. The Grizzly Bear ride, Cars, and the California Screamin' ride was a lot of fun! The churros are really good too. Our hotel room had bed bugs so all of our stuff had to be heat treated. We moved rooms that were farther from everyone else's, but it was a lot bigger. It took us a long time to switch rooms and get our things ready to be heat treated so we went to sleep around 2:00.
Day 9: Disneyland
Hi guys! Today was our last day of the trip and we went back to Disneyland. First we went on the Star Wars simulator and the Indiana Jones ride. Then we had to go on our tour to learn about creating animated movies. We did a bunch of activities like talking to Crush the turtle, learning how to draw Disney characters, and creating a storyboard. After, we went on more rides like Hyperspace Mountain and Splash Mountain. Then we ate dinner and went back to the hotel to pack and go to sleep.
