Hey everyone! Today was our first full day in Nashville! This morning we walked across the street and ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Then we got a ride from our Waianae friends to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. We got a tour of the place and we were able to see a bunch of clothes worn by country music stars and we learned about the history of country music. Our class also did this activity that allowed you to record a country song and I thought that was really cool. After the Country Music Hall of Fame we got a tour of the Bridgestone Arena where they play a lot of NHL games. A bunch of other Hawaii schools joined us on that tour and afterwards we got to see an actual NHL game. That stadium is home to the Nashville Predators and they challenged the Winnipeg Jets. That was my first NHL game and I thought it was a really amazing experience and it's very different from other sports I've watched. The Nashville Predators won 3 to 1 and the game ended around 10:00. Our first day was very busy, but it was still a lot of fun. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Today was our second day in Nashville, Tennessee. This morning we just ate our breakfast at the hotel and at 8:30 we headed to Studio B. Studio B is a very famous studio. Tons of artists like Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton have recorded many of their songs there. We were given a tour of the studio and learned how singers would record their songs. After that we went back to the County Music Hall of Fame and Museum to look in the the gift shop because we didn’t have time yesterday. I’m not sure why but almost everyone in our class bought harmonicas. Later, we went to downtown Nashville and just walked around. We went to this really cool candy store and I bought ice cream even though it was freezing cold. For lunch we ate at The Spaghetti Factory and then we continued walking around downtown Nashville. Then we walked to the Tennessee Titans stadium and bought some things from their gift shop until it was time for the tour. We got to see the Titans’s locker-room and they even hung up Marcus Mariota’s jersey for us to see. They also let us go down to the field. When the tour was done we walked to the Wildhorse Saloon to meet the other Hawaii schools and our pen pals from Castaic. At the saloon they were teaching everybody to line dance. Unfortunately they didn’t play any of the songs we’ve been taught to dance to back on Kauai, but it was still a lot of fun. That’s all we did today! Tomorrow we have our first competition and I can’t wait. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Today we had our first competition which was Crazy 8s. I am in the Crazy 8s Film team with Jasmine, Abby, Kai, and Keith. We had to create a short film in 8 hours or less based on our topic and title of our movie, “Stuck on Repeat”. We also had to include the prop they gave us which was a glue stick, into the film. Our team decided to make our film about a boy who is expected to bully others. Although, he doesn’t enjoy picking on others but he does it because he is afraid his friends will abandon him and start picking on him instead. He feels like he is living his life on repeat and in the end he decides to quit bullying others. Three students from the Big Island helped us out by acting in our video because they weren’t competing today which was a huge help. We turned in the video with two or three minutes to spare. The other team, Crazy 8s News Magazine, also turned in their video on time. We have two entries in and hopefully we place! After we turned in our videos we met up with our awesome pen pals from Castaic and exchanged pen pal gifts. I got a Harry Potter shirt which I’m really happy about because I love Harry Potter. She also got me a Mickey Mouse shirt along with a CMS TV shirt. Then we ate dinner at the mall and headed back for opening ceremonies. Tomorrow Kate and I will be competing for spot feature. I hope everything goes well! Thanks for reading.
Hey everyone! Today I had my Spot Feature Competition with Kate. We had breakfast in our rooms and headed down to get our flash drive and prompt at 8:30. For this contest you have to create a new story based on a topic they give you. You have to go out and talk to people you don’t even know and ask to interview them. They also restricted us to the hotel this year so we couldn’t walk around the town to find stories. I feel like that was a pretty big obstacle because almost everyone at the hotel is from STN and they are probably either competing or attending break out sessions so no one was really available. Our prompt was “The Power of Dreams” and this year we were given 3 hours to film instead of 2 hours. I really think having that extra hour helped us out a lot. They also give us 3 hours to edit but we must edit in a designated room. Kate and I walked around and we were rejected by many people. We finally found someone that was available and she agreed to do the interview and allowed us to film b-roll as well. Her name was Jennifer Fornal and she is the parent of one of the students competing at STN. When we got everything we needed, we started coming up with voiceovers and found a place to shoot the stand up. Kate and I were actually a few minutes early to the editing room and we actually finished editing our video half an hour early. We spent the rest of the time fixing any minor problems in the video. At 2:55 we turned in our flash drive and our deadline was at 3:00 so we were cutting it a bit close. Then we ate lunch and headed to the keynote speaker presentation. The keynote presentation was given by Boyd Huppert and he gave some advice and shared some of his videos with us. After, we ate dinner at the mall again and tonight was the Film Exellence Awards. This year we submitted our short film we created but unfortunately it didn’t place. Many of the films were amazing and some other Hawaii schools places which was amazing. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Today I did not compete and anything. I went to breakout sessions instead, where we learned about all types of different topics relating to media. I went to a session where we learned about how to produce funny videos and how to produce sad videos. The speaker showed a bunch of example videos and explained a bit about each. We also learned about how to start a Youtube channel and how to become famous from social media. It was taught by Rae Kanoa and she is on a popular Youtube channel caked Teens React, so it was really cool meeting her. This afternoon we also watched a video made by students that go to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School about the shooting at their school. They made the video in honor of the 17 students that passed away this year. They asked our class in advanced, to interview people on the topic and they included it in their video. I thought it was really touching and it was such an amazing video. After that we ate dinner at Crackerbarrel and then we went to the St. Patrick’s Day party. I’m not a huge fan of parties so I sat and played Fortnite for most of the night. Then we heade back to the rooms and we played Bean Boozled which was a lot of fun. That’s all for today and tomorrow we find out how well we did. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Today was closing ceremonies and we found out how well we did. We got 2nd place for Spot Feature! That’s the contest I competed in with Kate. We also placed 3rd in PSA which is Natalie, Halea, and Haley. Anchoring also placed honorable mention and Jasmine, Ty, and Janine are on that team. For Crazy 8s News Magazine they got first place! Ty, Kate, Evan, Janine, Haley, Halea, Natalie, and Shayne were on that team and they are all seventh graders. I’m so proud of them and I know they are all going to kill it next year! A bunch of other Hawaii schools placed and the winning videos were all amazing and very deserving of the award. After closing ceremonies we took the Hawaii Team photo. Every Hawaii school wears the same shirt and we gather for a picture with all Hawaii schools in it. Then we headed to the mall to shop and eat lunch. Everyone loved shopping but I’m not a shopper so I sat down and played video games for most of the time. Although I did buy some things for my friends back home. After shopping we met up with our Big Island friends to hang out one more time before we all left. It was a lot of fun and I’m so glad we were able to meet all of them. That was all we did today! I’m so proud of everyone for doing so well at STN this year and I can’t wait to see how they all do next year. I’m so sad that this is my last year going to STN with these amazing people.
Hey everyone! Today we woke up really early to leave for Boston. We had a two hour flight to New York first and then we headed straight to Boston. That was a one hour flight and when we landed we saw tons of snow. There was snow everywhere and we were so excited and i’m pretty sure it was the first time some of them saw snow. We got our rental cars and headed to our hotel. While we were unloading everything my dad flung snow at me so later on when we headed out to dinner I threw a snowball I made at him. We ate at Bertucci’s for dinner and after we went to Walmart to buy some essentials. We had a pretty chill day but it was still fun.
Hey everyone! Today was our first full day in Boston. This morning we drove the rental cars to a train station and took the train to the subway station. Then we rode the subway to Harvard square. We got a tour of Harvard by Kahunui. She is a student attending Harvard and she will actually be graduating this year. She is from Waianae and she was in John Allen and Mrs. Higuchi’s class. It was such a good tour and learned tons about Harvard. She told us that she chose classes that she weren’t available at her high school because she wanted to try new things. She also talked about how she got a full payed scholarship to Harvard and the benefits of moving far from home. After, we shopped for some Harvard merchandise and then ate lunch. We rode the subway back to the train station and took the train back to our cars and went back to the hotel. Then we practiced slideshow and kahoot game for our presentation to the Boston middle school on Thursday. For dinner we met with some of the Norwood High School media students and got to know some of them. Thanks for reading!
Hey guys! Today we woke up really early to go to Norwood High School because we ran part of their morning announcements. They actually interviewed Kate and I because they wanted to talk to us about our Spot Feature video. They also played the video we made on their morning announcements. There morning announcements is a lot more professional than ours and their set is really nice. After we got a tour of the school and we presented our slideshow for one of the classes. They had a lot of questions about Hawaii and they were really interesting. We also got to wear snow shoes and play in the snow. I couldn’t feel my hands but it was so much fun. We later went to Patriots Place to eat lunch at Five Guys and went shopping. We ate pizza at the hotel for dinner and that’s all we did today.
Hey everyone! Today we were supposed to go to Concord Middle School and present our slideshow for them but we weren’t able to make it due to the snow. Last night it snowed kind of a lot and we couldn’t make it. So instead we played in the snow. We had a snowball fight and made snow angels and snowmen. Everyone got cold pretty fast and we couldn’t feel our fingers or feet so we went inside and did some of the homework we had to make up since we missed school. I had to shower first because I was soaking and I kind of made some snow angels and i’m the area with dirt. Later, the teacher from Concord Middle School came to visit us and then we went back out in the snow. We climbed up to the top of a hill across the hotel and played with he fresh snow there. Keith, Evan, and I were trying to slide down the hill on our stomaches. I honestly didn’t expect it to work as well as it did and it got us soaking wet. When we got too cold again we went back inside to change and go into the city to eat lunch. After we ate we ended up taking the train farther into he city and saw all of the historical sites. We saw Paul Reviere’s old house and his statue. Our class also saw the freedom trail. Then we went to eat lunch Quincy Market for dinner and headed back to the hotel. Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Today was our last full day in Boston and we slept in a bit. We went to the mall first thing in the morning and I bought some soccer gear from Dick’s Sporting Goods. Then we went to ice skate for a couple of hours. At first I was kind of scared to let go of the wall but I ended up not even using the wall for most of the time. I started to get the hang of things and it was a lot of fun. After ice skating we ate lunch and shopped some more at another mall. I actually ended up buying stuff this time and I actually enjoyed it. Then we ate at Applebee’s for dinner and went back to the hotel and had to pack everything up. It was hard for some of us to fit everything in our suitcases because we had so much things. That’s all that we did today and thanks for reading!
